THE ROLE

A search is currently underway to recruit a new Chief Medical Officer for Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington. The facility is the 270-bed flagship of Kadlec Health System, and serves as a regional referral center. Kadlec Health System has the distinction of being the dominant provider in the Tri-Cities area, serving a growing population of more than 350,000 residents in southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon. Kadlec has experienced a great deal of success, and there is currently a major expansion and renovation project on the medical center campus that will add four floors to the main patient tower, with the potential for an additional 114 beds.

Under the direction of the KRMC Chief Administrative Officer and EW/MT Chief Physician Executive, the KRMC Chief Medical Officer serves as a member of the KRMC executive team, promoting the quadruple aim objectives of better care, lower cost and better health for our community and caregivers. In addition, the CMO provides oversight and support for the academic enterprise at KRMC, specifically professional education and medical research. The CMO works closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, Director of Pharmacy, and other key clinical leaders to ensure the highest levels of collaboration and partnership among clinical functions of the hospital and Kadlec ambulatory sites to ensure safe, effective processes and team dynamics. The CMO provides executive physician leadership for key clinical and operational functions, offers a clinical perspective tempered by a keen understanding of business principles and organizational behavior, and acts as a positive influence and liaison in developing a strong working relationship among administrative and clinical team members. The CMO serves as a key liaison between the hospitals’ employed medical group (KMA), and Kadlec Clinic employed providers, in addition to other members of the medical staff and its leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promotes provider alignment and engagement with organizational mission and goals at all levels.

  • Supports implementation of best medical practices and knowledge in the setting of a holistic approach to care of the total person.

  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures and communication of same for professional staff at KRMC.

  • Attends Medical Executive Committee and the major Professional Staff Committee meetings to interact with the chairman and committee members, provide administrative input and support, and resolve Professional Staff/Administrative issues or facilitate a timely resolution as applicable.

  • Participates and contributes in hospital staff/administrative meetings as required.

  • Enhances communication and understanding among providers and administration.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of clinical information systems, including EMR, CPOE and advanced clinical support applications.

  • Facilitates medical staff participation in KRMC operational and strategic work.

  • Mediates conflict between physicians and/or hospital staff consistent with the Standards of Behavior Policy for medical staff.

  • Works as requested with local, regional and PH&S colleagues to refine and implement the PH&S Quality Strategic Plan.

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in medicine and hospital / healthcare administration.

  • Coordinates activities with medical leaders at other PH&S ministries.

  • Provides direction and oversight for key KRMC medical directors, division chiefs and other medical program physician leaders.

  • Leads/participates on multidisciplinary quality teams that promote excellence in patient care outcomes.

  • Works with leadership, providers, and staff to foster a data driven approach to care management, quality improvement and patient safety.

  • Assures effective interfaces and provider representation in external review organizations (e.g., DOH, The Joint Commission.) activities.

  • Takes a lead role in sentinel event evaluation and response teams.

  • Assists as needed with case management and medical appropriateness reviews.

  • Participates with hospital staff, medical staff and quality improvement staff to define and implement quality initiatives at the hospital.

  • Reviews and oversees quality of services from physicians / provider groups providing services under contract with KRMC to ensure high quality, timely, cost effective, and competitive services.

  • Serves as an active role model and advocate regarding service excellence (patient experience).

  • Provides support, guidance and coordination for professional education activities, including medical students and residents, and coordination with nursing, pharmacy, anesthesia and other professional disciplines.

  • Provides support, guidance and coordination of medical research activities

  • Serves as liaison with the local and regional academic partners in support of KRMC.

Qualifications:

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

  • Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited institution and Board certification is required.

  • License to practice medicine in the State of Washington is required.

  • Minimum of seven years of significant experience as a practicing physician and in leading clinical quality improvement and medical management functions, including experience as a physician leader with responsibility for clinical quality and physician leadership development and education is required.

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Health Administration or Business Administration OR Certificate in Healthcare Management is preferred.

  • Progressive management experience, culminating in executive leadership experience is preferred.

  • Experience optimizing and implementing clinical information systems is preferred.

  • Experience with hospital regulatory requirements (CMS, NCQA, Joint Commission, others) accreditation processes and standards is desirable.

  • Experience developing and managing a quality program in an HMO, medical group, or hospital setting is desirable.

  • Experience in program development and design of clinical care systems with measurable results is desirable.

  • Recognized expertise in service and clinical quality improvement is desirable.

  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, High Reliability, and/or other process improvement methodologies is preferred.
